Artist Statement
Originally drawn to clay for its tactile nature, clay itself is a direct tracing of the movements of one’s body. There is a certain amount of physicality that goes into his work that is recorded with each alteration and fold of clay. Exploration of fabric as inspiration and as an added material in his work is a fascinating frontier. Like clay, fabric can be stretched, molded, and sculpted in a variety of ways. When used in combination with clay, fabric can create an interesting dichotomy between hard and soft, rigid and flowing. The use of fabric with clay often highlights and draws attention to aspects one might overlook. Specifically, it is used as points of tension between components in the composition.
